Surviving College

By Amanda Cohen on January 14, 2015

Physical and mental wellbeing is an aspect of wellness that is highly ignored by college students. If someone is only getting two hours of sleep each night for the entire semester, that person usually just responds, “That’s what happens when you go to college.” Or, if a person is only studying during his or her college career and not participating in a variety of activities, that person may respond, “I can’t do anything that will not benefit my GPA.” When did the definition of a college life switch from having a well-rounded schedule filled with independence and interesting classes to never sleeping and only studying?

Transitioning to college life is difficult, but with these tips, I believe that everyone will have the ability to make this transition not only smooth, but also beneficial to each person individually.

  • Take classes that you truly enjoy: Everyone constantly agonizes over taking classes just to fulfill certain credits. What is the point of taking a class if you do not find it interesting? Is it because the class has a smaller time commitment then the other class that you wanted to take? Do not let these factors come into play when choosing classes! Even if a different, but more interesting class, has a greater time commitment, the time will go by much faster if you enjoy the topic you are learning about.

  • Get involved with extracurricular activities: On a campus as large as Michigan’s, the student organizations and other student extracurricular activities are endless! Whether the extracurricular is a student organization or even as simple as going to the CCRB thirty minutes a day to run, you should definitely make room for these activities in your schedule. Not only are some activities great resumé builders, but also allows for the exploration of your various interests without having to take on an extra ten credits of courses.

  • Spend time with friends: All college students stress about work and exams, but it is crucial to spend time with your friends, as they are your major support system on campus. Spending time with friends can range from getting lunch to just chilling with them at Starbucks for a little bit, just as long as you take time to enjoy each other’s company and think about something other than school for a few minutes of your day.

  • Take some “you” time: The life of a college student is stressful and long; it is a major necessity to take some time to yourself every now and then. Watch a TV show, paint your nails, lie in bed, take a walk, or do anything else you truly enjoy. We need this time to reboot, or else we will drive ourselves into the ground.

  • Have some fun!
