Now that it’s summer, you probably have a little more free time in the coming months to unwind and do fun things that you haven’t been able to do in a while. One of these things might include traveling, and if you’re a pretty family-oriented person, traveling with family could be high up on your list.

Depending on the size, structure, and interests of your family, there are a lot of options as to what everyone can do together. Of course, when traveling with family members, one thing you want to make sure of is that there are activities and events all of you can enjoy.

With Kids

If your family includes children, having fun activities to keep them occupied and happy is always a good idea. (After all, no one wants to be stuck during a 10-hour car ride with a bored and cranky 7-year old!) Especially if your family will be traveling by car, there are plenty of fun road trip activities that can keep both kids, adults, and anyone else in between content … at least for a little while.

1. Choose a good playlist.

If there’s something that most kids (and most people in general) love, it’s music. Whether you listen to a favorite genre and/or artist religiously, or you tend to casually bob your head along to anything that comes on the radio, you and your family can most likely find something to agree on in the music realm. Having a good song playlist can certainly make the long car ride a little more exciting and bearable, especially if it includes songs that the kids can get into.

Not sure what kinds of songs to include? You might consider adding some Disney into the mix, as almost no child can resist those peppy tunes. You can also check out this helpful playlist, which offers some upbeat, well-known selections that might just get the kids (and the rest of the family) happily singing along together.

2. Play car games.

This can either work really well or be incredibly exhausting (or both), but odds are that it will turn out to be super fun and rewarding for the whole family. (Even if there aren’t kids coming along on your road trip, the adults are sure to enjoy playing car games too!)

You might consider playing some classic games, such as “I spy,” 20 Questions, or spotting license plates from different states. Another option is virtual hide-and-seek, in which the “hider” picks a spot in your house to virtually hide in, and the “seeker” asks questions that can be answered with “yes” or “no” until they have guessed the imaginary hiding spot.

If your family vacation happens to not have any kids in tow, there are plenty of other fun things you and your family members can all partake in together.

If your road trip route takes you past any interesting towns and neighborhoods or scenic areas, take advantage of those spots and turn the occasion into a fun adventure. When my family and I visited California several years ago, we rented a car and drove along the coast, starting in the south (San Diego) to the north (San Francisco). Over the course of a week, we stopped in different towns to make the most of what the state had to offer — from beaches to hiking trails to shopping malls to restaurants.

Wherever your family is headed, there are sure to be some great spots at which you can stop along the way. Depending on what your family in particular likes to do, you might opt to stop in at a quaint little town and check out some of the shops and stores, or maybe your family would enjoy connecting with nature and going for a hike on a nearby forest trail. To find out what kinds of fun and interesting things there are to do along your driving route, do a little research beforehand. Pinpointing specific spots can make the car trip itself feel like part of the vacation. On the other hand, if you and your family more often tend to be spontaneous, you can find things to do and places to stop at in the spur of the moment while driving by.

When you actually arrive at your travel destination, the door is open to all of the great activities to which you and your family have access. Depending on where you’ve chosen to vacation, there is sure to be a plethora of activities that everyone can appreciate. From spas and beaches to amusement parks and tourist sites, you and your family will be able to enjoy your travels to the fullest.
